Kayaking, canoeing + paddleboarding are great ways to explore the Austin area. These water sports also offer both physical and mental health benefits that extend far beyond a day on the water. |
|
|
But before we dive in, letâs get a lay of the land (er, water). Check out these unique facts about our region: - There are 80,000 miles of rivers and streams across Texas.
- Texas has 23 river basins + seven major bays and estuaries.
- A total of 31 aquifers supply ~60% of the stateâs annual water usage.
Next, we should talk about paddling safety, so you donât capsize: - Always wear a personal flotation device.
-
Start small. Water, especially flowing water, can be intimidating. First-timers should opt for a small lake, pond, or city canal. You donât want to get in over your head.
- Consider a guided adventure from Austin Paddle Shack before heading out on your own.
- For a fully detailed list of dos + donâts, check out this paddling safety guide.
And finally, here are a few local options for getting your feet wet: -
Lady Bird Lake, downtown | Thankfully, Lady Bird Lake is within city limits, so you don't have to go far to enjoy this popular spot. Rowing Dock ATX offers kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals.
-
San Marcos River, central San Marcos | 40-minute drive | If youâre in the Austin area long enough, youâll hear âletâs float the river.â In less than an hour, travel to San Marcos to relax on the river. BYOB + try a Crystal Kayak Glow Tour with Paddle SMTX.

Hello, Austin, City Editor London here. đ If youâre anything like me, youâd bring your pet with you everywhere â even to your big day.
Enter The Pet Gal, a Wedding Pet Attendant service. I tagged along to a recent event with Wedding Pet Attendant Clare and pup Kona, her fluffy charge for the day. Hereâs what the experience was like, and how you can Try This. |
Wedding Pet Attendant Clare made sure to get acquainted with Kona before the event. | Photo by the ATXtoday team |
What we tried (with pricing):
Kona needed a little extra attention that afternoon, because he had to get emergency stitches that morning.
To ensure Konaâs mom and dad could focus on getting ready for their big day, Clare took on extra hours to stay with Kona at the emergency room and keep a close eye on the pupper after the wedding.
Clare provided just the kind of care youâd want for your furry family, and at the cost of $400 per two hours, you can count on similar support at your event.* |
