Believe it or not, Austin, but it’s already August. It won’t be long before school supplies hit the shelves and local campuses + coffee shops are once again swamped with studying students.
August may be the Sunday of summer, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make the most of it. Here are eight must-do events taking place around town this month that will help you experience your best August yet.

Longtime Austin radio host John Aielli died on Sunday at 76 years old. The radio personality had a tenure with KUT and KUTX for 50+ years. He was well known for his radio show “Eklektikos.” (KUT)
Biz -
Texas recorded the nation's largest job gains in June, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. The Lone Star State added 82,500 nonfarm jobs, and saw a 1% decrease in its unemployment rate. (Community Impact Austin)
Civic -
In case you missed it, Austin City Council recently voted to put a $350 million affordable housing bond on the November ballot. If passed, the bond — which was originally proposed at $300 million — would be the city’s largest housing bond to date. 🗳️ (KXAN)
Development -
A new mixed-use development is headed to the northwest corner of Kenney Fort Boulevard and Highway 79, following its approval from the Round Rock City Council. The project will include up to 530 housing units + commercial space. 🏗️ (Community Impact Austin)
Eat -
South Austin’s 1417 Bistro is now 1417 French Bistro. Today marks the official launch of the rebranded concept, which is being led by executive chef Kyle Mulligan. New menu items include escargot + French onion soup. 🇫🇷 (Eater Austin)
Coming Soon -
Nido — a new restaurant concept that features local charm and coastal Europe — will open in late September on the rooftop of The Loren at Lady Bird Lake at 1211 W. Riverside Dr. Dishes will include chicken wings stuffed with foie gras and braised lamb breast with milk jam + herb salad. 🍽️
